BREAKFAST MEETING: Undue Influence and the Exploitation of the Elderly

Date: Wednesday, March 13, 2013
Time: 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM
Location: Westport Public Library
Speaker: David T. Leibell, Partner, Wiggin & Dana LLP

We are pleased to announce that David T. Leibell, Partner at Wiggin & Dana, LLP, will be the guest speaker on the topic of  "Undue Influence and the Exploitation of the Elderly" at our “members only” breakfast meeting on Wednesday, March 13, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., at The Westport Library.

Financial exploitation of the elderly is a boom business. One estimate puts the cost at $40 billion annually. When people with diminished capacity fall under the sway of those who want their money, the results can be tragic for the victims and their families. Stopping the perpetrators isn't always easy, since most states’ laws have a low standard for capacity. This presentation will identify the signs of undue influence and suggest ways to counter it through the use of proper drafting, and if necessary, the protection of the Probate Court.

Council Breakfast Meetings are held at the Westport Public Library (Arnold Bernhard Plaza – Levitt Pavilion Main Entrance), Westport, Connecticut, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.The library has asked that attendees arrive promptly at 8:00. They open the door for us at 8:00 even though the library doesn't open until 9:00. Since the library will open early to accommodate us, their Coffee Shop will not be open for service during our meeting. Please feel free to bring coffee, tea, bagels, etc. to the meeting. There is a Starbucks Coffee diagonally across from the Westport Library on the Post Road and Oscar’s Deli is located on Main Street.

Reservations to attend can be made by contacting me by email (MABovino@DavidsonDawson.com) or by telephone (203-966-8759); “first come, first served.” As a courtesy to those who attend, we request that cell phones be silenced during the session. We also request that “No Shows” be minimized.

If we must cancel a breakfast meeting, an email will be sent to all registrants for whom we have an email address and we will make every effort to contact all registrants by phone as well. If you are unable to check your email or voice messages, please visit our website at www.epclfc.org where the cancellation announcement will be posted on our home page under “Next Meeting.” Except in unusual circumstances, we would know about the cancellation by 4:00 p.m. the afternoon prior to a breakfast meeting.

Finally, several reminders: don’t forget that we rescheduled Helen Bosch and Erin Duques on behalf of the Advocacy Services department of Vista Vocational & Life Skills Center, a non-profit with over 20 years of providing training and support to individuals with disabilities, to present at our “members only” breakfast meeting on Wednesday, April 24, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., at The Westport Library.
